🎓What is the IB program ?
The IB, or International Baccalaureate, is an education program that is widely recognized around the world, created by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO). It is specifically designed for high school students who want to attend an international university, and it consists of challenging and vigorous courses in English that last over a period of two years.
One of the signature aspects of the IB program is the fact that you get to choose the subjects that you like or are interested in. In this way it is similar to university.
IB students are taught to manage their time independently and complete major projects on their own. The program focuses on critical thinking, research skills, and global awareness. Because of this the IB is respected by universities around the world.
🎓 IBプログラムとは？
IB（国際バカロレア）プログラムとは、International Baccalaureate Organizationというスイスの財団が提供する国際的な教育プログラムです。主に「海外の大学に進学を希望する高校生」に向けたカリキュラムで、2年間にわたって英語で行われるレベルの高い授業が特徴です。
IBの大きなポイントは、自分の好きな科目や興味のある科目を選べること。大学のように、自分で学びたい分野を早い段階で選択し極めることができるのが魅力です。
またIBでは以下のことに重点を置いているため、世界中の大学から高く評価されています。
- 時間管理を自分で行う力
- 大きなプロジェクトをやり遂げる力
- リサーチ力や論理的思考力
- 世界的な視野（グローバルな考え方）
🌎Living Between Two Cultures
I grew up in Japan, but I was very much an English oriented person. My mother tongue is English and was the only language of the house in which I grew up. Because of this, the IB program felt like a natural fit for me. I have always enjoyed reading, and watching TV shows and movies in English since I was little, so the international background of the program felt like the right choice.

僕は日本で育ちましたが、英語中心の環境で生活してきました。母語は英語で、家の中ではいつも英語を使っていました。小さいころから英語で本を読んだり、テレビや映画を観たりするのが大好きでした。そのため、国際的な雰囲気を持つIBプログラムは僕にとって、ごく自然な選択でした。
📚The Challenges of IB in Japan
The IB program is not easy. It requires firm time management and lots of self-discipline. One of the biggest challenges is to balance out assignments, exams, and other additional projects like CAS (creativity activity service). It can oftentimes feel overwhelming.
I feel like the structured and strict nature of Japan’s education system did help me bear through the program by pushing me harder. Even though the long study hours and written assignments like the EE (Extended Essay) were stressful and time consuming, the environment of the school helped me stay focused.
📚日本でIBを学ぶ大変さ
正直に言うと、IBは簡単ではありません。膨大な課題とテストに加えてEE（Extended Essay）という長い論文を同時にこなしながら、更に内申点に直結するCAS（Creativity[創造性]、Activity[活動]、Service[奉仕]の3要素で構成される18か月に及ぶ実践的な課外活動とその記録作成）も必須となるので、徹底した時間と自己管理ができるストイックさが必要です。
特にCASやEEは時間もエネルギーも必要で、時には挫折しそうになることもありました。しかし、学校の厳しくも徹底した環境が、僕の対応領域を広げてくれました。 長い勉強時間や多くのレポート課題は大変でしたが、その分、集中してやり切る力が身についたと思います。
🤝Support from Teachers and Friends
One of the best parts of my IB experience was the support system. My teachers were encouraging and always willing to explain things again when I didn’t understand. They cared not only about grades, but also about our growth as people.
Many of my classmates came from different backgrounds and countries and added a sense of collective international struggle, which also helped me realize that I wasn’t alone in the fight. Everyone tends to help and motivate each other which enhances the morale of the class.
🤝先生や友達の支え
IB生活で一番良かったことは、しっかりとした支えてくれる体制です。先生たちはとても親身で、分からないことがあれば何度でも説明してくれました。成績だけでなく、人として成長できるように大切にしてくれていました。
クラスメートもさまざまな国籍や背景を持つ人たちで、時には違うからこそ生まれる衝突もありましたが、だからこそ「みんなで一緒に頑張っている」という感覚がありました。お互いに励まし合いながら共に乗り越えることができた大切な仲間です。
🌟Looking back
Looking back, studying IB in Japan as a Canadian was not always easy, but it was worth it. It pushed me to grow academically and personally. Being in an environment where everyone is internationally minded can be a very unique experience especially in japan.
🌟 振り返ってみて
カナダ人として日本でIBを学ぶことは、決して簡単ではありませんでしたが、勉強面だけでなく、人としても成長できたと思います。日本にいながら、国際的な考え方を持つ仲間と国際的な環境で教育を受けられたことは、とても特別な経験でした。
